Rising 5′s leavers presentation July 2011.
The Rising Five’s Session:-
In addition to our regular sessions we have a Rising 5′s session on Monday afternoon’s 12.15 p.m. – 3.15 p.m. This session is designed to prepare older children for the transition to Primary School by extending on the activities already offered at Pre-School, but with more emphasis on formal working in small groups, or one-to-one, and introduces routines similar to those encountered at Big School such as lunch time and P.E.
The session follows on from the normal morning session therefore allowing the children the chance to stay and play all day. We incorporate a lunch break, which allows the children to sit and eat their packed lunch together as they will be doing at big school.
The children are taught to recognise letters and sounds, learn to form letters and numbers and write their own name. They take part in P.E. gaining confidence in changing on their own ready for school. The activities for this session are structured following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and of course there will be time for play with toys such as puzzles, games, train sets and dolls house.
Children starting primary school in September 2012 are invited to attend the Rising Five’s session from September 2011. (The children starting school in Sept 2013 will be invited to start R5′s from Sept 2012 and so on).
We are delighted to have such close links with our village primary school, Ardleigh St. Mary’s. It is the natural progression for the majority of children that attend our Pre-School. The Rising 5′s visit the Reception Class and attend assemblies at regular intervals every term, and we are very fortunate to have the Reception Class Teacher visit our session at Pre-School twice a term! By the time the children leave to start big school they are very familiar with the surroundings, teaching staff and routines of big school!
We also enjoy welcoming Amanda Watts to Pre-School who visits us to read a bible story and brings colouring pictures for the children.
One of the comments we hear most often from parents is how easy the transition from Pre-School to Big School was for their child thanks to the Rising 5′s session. As we said, the majority of children who attend Ardleigh Pre-School go on to attend Ardleigh St. Mary’s Primary School, but it is not compulsory. The session will also benefit children attending different Primary Schools as it encourages familiarisation with a big school atmosphere and the subtly different routines the child will experience.
NB: We are pleased to offer a ‘late pick up’ service for this session on Monday afternoon’s for parents who are picking up children from other local primary schools, who cannot get to Pre-School for 3.15 p.m. This service is available for 30 minutes, i.e. until 3.45 p.m. and is charged at £1.00 per 15 minutes.
